I had set up so that a couple of posts (this one and this one) would post on a schedule. However it appears I have a gremlin causing issues in the scheduling (wp-cron) bit of the site software (WordPress). I’m not sure what caused it really.

Anyway, the respective posts are now posted. I guess it meant the Sir Terry Pratchett post I made was the newest for a while longer at least.

No new crafts or jewellery to share sadly. Hopefully will have some soon, but have Gadget Show Live to look forward to in the meantime :)

Until next time.

Purple haze

A quick post with some recent items i’ve made.

I also found some nice items in a charity shop recently that should provide some useful beads for more projects (to add to the big pile of such finds!).

Birmingham Comic Con and some work in progress

So last weekend it was MCM Memorabilia/Comic Con at the NEC in BIrmingham. It was the first time Richard had made it along to it. We had a lovely time and came away with a few geeky items, mostly it was a few items of jewellery.

Unfortunately this year I forgot my camera so didn’t take any photos of the various cosplay costumes on display.

As well as Comic Con last weekend I have been working on a few items, one of which is still a work in progress.

With the passing of my favourite author – Sir Terry Pratchett – I decided I wanted to make some items that were Discworld themed, one of these is below. I have plans for a few other items too, more on those at a later date though.

In memory…

So being a geek, I’ve always loved things such as Star Trek, but especially Discworld.

And recently the world lost both Leonard Nimoy and Sir Terry Pratchett.

Of the two the passing of Sir Terry hit me the hardest. I’m an avid reader these days, but many years ago I wasn’t really much of a reader at all. Until that is I picked up a copy of Equal Rites that is.

From that moment I was hooked, not just on the Discworld books, which I grew to love and have since read all the currently published books in the series, but on reading Science Fiction and fantasy works.

As well as sparking my passion for books and reading, Sir Terry’s Discworld books also got me in touch with a great group of people I met via (admittedly I read rather than posted there, but I did find the #afp IRC channel). Over the following years through the occasional meet I managed to make and the Discworld Conventions (2002, 2004, 2006, 2010, 2012 and 2014) and the Clarecraft Discworld Events (2001, 2003) I made a number of friendships.

I was fortunate to meet Sir Terry on a couple of occasions, albeit briefly. He was always friendly and had time for his fans. When he was later diagnosed with Alzhimers my already great respect for him grew greater as he put a public face to such a horrible illness.

His passing leaves a void. However he leaves behind a beautiful and funny collection of work and one of the best fandoms I have the pleasure of knowing.

I’ll end with a couple of quotes.

Knowing that you are going to die is, I suspect, the beginning of wisdom. — Terry Pratchett

No one is actually dead until the ripples they cause in the world die away… — Terry Pratchett (Reaper Man)

UPDATE: I’ve now added GNU Terry Pratchett to the website

Star Wars and Doctor Who gifts

So a while ago I mentioned in a previous post that I’d made some gifts for Richard for Christmas. At the time I had no photos of the items I’d made him as they were at his place. I now have photos of them to share.

I’m rather happy with them myself and Richard liked them too, which after all is the point :)

So first a box for them to be packed in:

2015-03-26 22.50.33

Then some Star Wars cuff-links and tie pins:

Millenium Falcon cuff-links and tie pin.

Millennium Falcon cuff-links and tie pin. Getting the colours right proved a challenge, but I’m happy with the overall result.

Darth Vader tie pin with previously made Darth Vader cuff-links.

Darth Vader tie pin with previously made Darth Vader cuff-links. Such a simple thing to make these.

Followed by some Dalek cuff-links and tie pins:

And some K9 cuff-links and tie pin and a TARDIS tie pin:

tardis tie pin

Tardis tie pin. I like how this tardis came out better than previous attempts.

K9 cuff-links and tie pin

So those are the gifts Richard got for Christmas, as well as a few other (mainly Star Wars related) items :)

Until next time

Green memories

I decided I wanted a new ring and a new bracelet.

The ring was pretty simple and not really any difference between it and previous efforts. I rather like the style and simplicity. I intend to try experiments with a few other designs, but that’ll be for another day.

2015-03-11 13.04.15

I then started to try something else with another ring. But the results were not to my liking sadly.

I have had some memory wire for a while and not really been sure what to do with it until today when an idea struck me. I’m quite happy with the results for a first attempt. I’m by no means in my opinion good at this sort of thing but muddle through best I can.

The most important aspect however are not the results as such but the distraction that making items brings from fatigue, chronic pain and depression. All of which are a part of daily life, so any respite however small is welcome.

I’m quite happy with it though :-)

I’ll be trying a couple more I think. As long as I can find enough suitable beads that is, the next one will have to be purple I think as I’ve already got a red one I found in a charity shop.

Until next time :-)

Here be dragons!

So I’ve been meaning to finish off making a set of dragon cufflinks for Richard and this weekend I finally got around to it.

They turned out nicely, if bigger than I first intended.

Richard loved them  :-)

I’m rather pleased with them too. so much so that I might make similar as pendants for myself.

Until next time :-)

Design & fustration – take 2

The original post I wrote got eaten somehow by the Android app for WordPress, phone rebooted due to low battery during the upload and both the app and the website seem to lose all but the original title – oops!

Anyway, I wrote in that post that I’d had the frustration of trying to design a pair of earrings, a necklace and maybe a bracelet to complement a new dress I have. The red flower glass beads I bought recently – and used recently for some rings – are perfect for it, but finding the right combination of spacer beads and enough of them proved a pain! my stash of beads, findings and so on is a bit disorganised to say the least.

2015-03-06 19.30.23 2015-03-06 19.30.59 2015-03-06 20.04.10 2015-03-06 17.36.04

In the end I found enough and changed the colours/types of beads around a bit and produced the following:

2015-03-06 20.24.10 2015-03-06 20.07.09 2015-03-06 20.23.37

Ended up a bit longer than I first intended, but I think they work nicely, though still not entirely sure about the dangly bits on the ends, I might cut those and the loop off and leave it with a knot at the bottom instead.

2015-03-06 18.49.17Next onto the necklace. I was at first a bit stumped on how to do it, then made these connectors:

Next I was trying to think of how to provide a focal point. Lacking a suitable bead that would work in my stash I came up with the following.

That gave me the final design and it just remained to decide the method of wearing it (ie ribbon or chain etc). I couldn’t find ribbon I wanted in my stash, so chain it was.

The final design:2015-03-06 20.38.50

2015-03-06 20.43.07

Enough work for today I think. My back hurts now, but I’m happy with the outcome. Cuff-links will have to wait till tomorrow if I get chance.

Yet more rings

Just a very quick post with a photo of yet another ring I made quickly last night.

2015-03-06 17.15.20

I again managed to make it a bit smaller than intended!

The two similar rings from yesterday’s post were very happily received by people at my slimming world group. Though one was too big for intended recipient. But it didn’t last long before being snapped up by another group member, it happened to be the perfect size for her :-)

I have no intention of making many more as I’ve always wanted this to remain a hobby. I think itd lose most of the therapeutic value were I to try and make a business of it. I also don’t think I’d cope well with deadlines etc owing to my health issues. The occasional item as one offs because someone liked what I’d made is fine though perhaps. 99% will be for myself and or as gifts for friends and family.

Anyway, back to it I guess.

More Rings

A quick post with some more rings made as below.

Not entirely sure about the one on the right. I have run out of 18ga wire, think 20ga is too thin and weak for the design, but those beads won’t fit 18ga, so a bit more thinking on that one I

Happy enough with the other two though, made quickly for someone at my local slimming world group. Think one might be too small the other too big. but won’t know until tomorrow evening. If so I’ll keep them myself.
